There was a quickness
in the blunt shadow of the rain,
one cloud an avenger,
it lulled the sky
into thinking alone;
It thought of stones.
Straight handfuls hit
the slope of the afternoon.
So we ran to escape the blast,
“hail” for what you are
and what you give in to.
We gave way.
The sky gave thumps.
Bolts cleft them in two
to shatter the summer song
sinking deeper within the ground
of young blade fears.
Once in a while the green
will bounce them back in defiance,
but not today I felt.
Today was off elsewhere.
